About Me:
I was born in Wales, U.K, to a Welsh father and Scottish mother.
I have 2 brothers, my big brother being 15 years older than me.
At the age of 8 my mum and I immigrated to Sydney, Australia, to
be closer to the rest of our family, in particular my Nan and Pop.
It was at this time my love for gymnastics started to develop. My
Pop would teach me how to do handstands and cartwheels in the back
yard.
I later joined the local YMCA and started to compete. At a school
comp, a coach, who was in the audience, spotted me and recommended
a new coach, who would improve my skills further.
After a short time I reached the elite level and my training routine
intensified, I would train 6 days, minimum of 4 hours a day. It
was such a financial struggle for my mum to send me to gymnastics,
but my mum and Nan supported me 100%.
I was fortunate enough to represent Australia twice, first in New
Zealand and then in Hawaii (which was my favorite). I was asked
to tryout for a scholarship with the Western Australian Institute
of Sport [the main gymnastics facility in Australia] and was granted
a position. My family relocated to the opposite side of Australia
when I was 15 years old. My training got even tougher, we would
train Monday to Friday after school, all day Saturday and 2 mornings
a week before school.
I began to hate gymnastics, injuries, pressure and little time for
anything other than training, started to take its toll.
At the age of 17 I retired from gym, not wanting to ever have anything
to do with the sport again and never thinking I would.
I finished high school and decided to go over back to the UK. When
I returned to Australia one year later, I started work in the hospitality
industry. It was through this work that I would eventually meet
my future husband, Rob. We later married and had 2 wonderful children,
Kea and Dylan. After I had Dylan I became a full time Mum. My friends
persuaded me to join the local gym and I thought it would be a good
way to get back into shape and enjoy the social aspect. After about
6 months, I began training once week with a personal trainer, who
not only improved my diet but also my physique. A year later he
suggested that I should compete. I had heard of bodybuilding comps,
but knew nothing of fitness.
Just over 3 months later, I entered our 2001 IFBB State Bodybuilding
and Fitness comp. I was placed 1st overall. I later went onto the
Nationals and placed 3rd. After these comps my training intensity
dropped, as I felt I didn’t have a goal to reach. I was told
about the 2002 Australasian Titles to be held in Sydney and wanted
to give it a shot. After I won this comp, I began to think “maybe
I could be good at this sport”. I again started gymnastic
training (something I never thought I would do again), to improve
my routine. Later that year I won our State championships, the National
Championships and went to compete at the Amateur World Championships
in Brno (Czech Republic), where I placed 5th overall, the highest
ever placing by an Australian. I made application and was then awarded
my Pro card.
My first Pro show was the 2003 Jan Tana where I placed 11th overall.
I knew I would have to work hard and show my face at as many shows
as I could, to become better know in the USA. My next show would
be the 2004 NY Pro, placing 12th overall, winning the 2min routine
round. I was initially disappointed, but then after looking closer
at my physique, I had to agree with the judges that I was too muscular.
My placings improved dramatically with my next 2 shows, 4th at the
South West Pro and 6th at the GNC (winning both routine rounds).
But it was still my physique rounds that were letting me down. This
is when I started training with Mike Davies, who made amazing improvements
to physique.
2005 has started off fantastically, firstly I received an invite
to the Ms Fitness International (unfortunately injuring both my
hamstrings just weeks before competing which certainly put a dampener
on this comp) where I placed 8th overall. I stayed on to compete
at the New York show held two weeks later. I was completely stoked
to be placed 3rd here, which has now qualified me for the 2005 Olympia
held in October.
I am very excited to be able to compete at this level and look forward
to competing at this event.
